Maybe it’s Maybelline; maybe it’s family biographer and kin, Sharrie Williams! (Interview)
Cosmetics are almost incidental in The Maybelline Story, an irresistible new business and family history book by an heir to the Williams family legacy, Sharrie Williams, and her co-author, Bettie Youngs.
If you loved watching the old prime time soap operas “Dallas” or “Dynasty” — or read the novels of Jackie Collins — you’ve got to read this story, told by a Maybelline insider.
I’ve never worn a drop of makeup in my life but I found this to be a genuine page-turner. The Williams Family was often dysfunctional and competitive with each other, but under Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams—Sharrie’s “Unk Ile”—it never ceased to be ambitious and aggressive enough to serve a Depression, war, a series of car accidents and much more. There is a lot of sensationalism in the Williams family history, starting with the revelation of Tom Lyle Williams’ homosexuality, children born out of wedlock, murder, theft, alcoholism and drug abuse. It is more like the Ewings of “Dallas” on steroids with every turn of the page. Some of the tragedy is incredibly recent: we had to reschedule this interview two weeks ago when Sharrie’s mother, Pauline, died after a long illness.
